Under the palms a veiled woman would pass silently, or an old man with a donkey; it is beautiful to see a human being pass across the motionless face of nature without disturbing it; I would come back toward my hotel and be moved to see my own footprints in the soft sand. After years of living with others, this encounter with myself stirred me so deeply that I believed it to be the dawn of a sort of wisdom. It was only an interim, but for a long time I kept the palm trees, the sands, and their silence in my heart.
